    Dynamic Euler Diagram Drawing

    In this paper we describe a method to lay out a graph enhanced Euler diagram so that it looks similar to a previously drawn graph enhanced Euler diagram. This task is non-trivial when the underlying structures of the diagrams differ. In particular, if a structural change is made to an existing drawn diagram, our work enables the presentation of the new diagram with minor disruption to the user's mental map. As the new diagram can be generated from an abstract representation, its initial embedding may be very different from that of the original. We have developed comparison measures for Euler diagrams, integrated into a multicriteria optimizer, and applied a force model for associated graphs that attempts to move nodes towards their positions in the original layout. To further enhance the usability of the system, the transition between diagrams can be animated

    A conceptual design study for a two-dimensional, electronically scanned thinned array radiometer

    A conceptual design for the Two-Dimensional, Electronically Steered Thinned Array Radiometer (ESTAR) is described. This instrument is a synthetic aperture microwave radiometer that operates in the L-band frequency range for the measurement of soil moisture and ocean salinity. Two auxiliary instruments, an 8-12 micron, scanning infrared radiometer and a 0.4-1.0 micron, charge coupled device (CCD) video camera, are included to provided data for sea surface temperature measurements and spatial registration of targets respectively. The science requirements were defined by Goddard Space Flight Center. Instrument and the spacecraft configurations are described for missions using the Pegasus and Taurus launch vehicles. The analyses and design trades described include: estimations of size, mass and power, instrument viewing coverage, mechanical design trades, structural and thermal analyses, data and communications performance assessments, and cost estimation

    Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a chat system that has millions of users. IRC robots (bots) are programs that sit in chat rooms and provide different services to users. The IRC bot as a mechanism for human interaction with the Semantic Web specifically with web services and knowledge bases is simple to program, has an intuitive, conversational interface for human users, and fits well with the inputs and outputs of Semantic Web queries. This paper presents implementations of bots for interacting with web services and FOAF/Trust data models. We outline tools for implementation and present directions for future work to generalize the function of these bots

    Drawing Graphs in Euler Diagrams

    We describe a method for drawing graph-enhanced Euler diagrams using a three stage method. The first stage is to lay out the underlying Euler diagram using a multicriteria optimizing system. The second stage is to find suitable locations for nodes in the zones of the Euler diagram using a force based method. The third stage is to minimize edge crossings and total edge length by swapping the location of nodes that are in the same zone with a multicriteria hill climbing method. We show a working version of the software that draws spider diagrams. Spider diagrams represent logical expressions by superimpos-ing graphs upon an Euler diagram. This application requires an extra step in the drawing process because the embedded graphs only convey information about the connectedness of nodes and so a spanning tree must be chosen for each maximally connected component. Similar notations to Euler diagrams enhanced with graphs are common in many applications and our method is generalizable to drawing Hypergraphs represented in the subset standard, or to drawing Hi-graphs where edges are restricted to connecting with only atomic nodes

Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses 7(6), 1079–1087. Introduction Recent literature suggests that dual or multiple virus infections may affect disease severity. However, few studies have investigated the effect of co‐infection with influenza A viruses. Objectives To identify the association between influenza A and respiratory viruses co‐infections with disease outcome. Methodology Data for samples from North West England tested between January 2007 and June 2011 was analysed for patterns of co‐infection between influenza A viruses and eight respiratory viruses. Risk of hospitalisation to ICU or general ward in single versus co‐infections was assessed using logistic regression. Results Of the 25 596 samples analysed for respiratory viruses 40·7% (10 501) were positive for any virus. Co‐infections were detected in 4·7% (137/2879) of all patients with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, and 7·3% (57/779) of those with other influenza A virus infections. Co‐infection between seasonal influenza A viruses and influenza B virus was associated with a significant increase in the risk of admission to ICU/death (OR: 22·0, 95% CI: 2·21–219·8, P = 0·008). Respiratory syncytial virus/influenza A (RSV/Flu A) co‐infection also increased this risk but was not statistically significant. For influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, RSV and AdV co‐infection increased risk of hospitalisation to general ward whereas Flu B increased risk of admission to ICU, but none of these were statistically significant. Conclusion Co‐infection is a significant predictor of disease outcome; combined treatment, introduction of an integrated vaccine for all respiratory viruses and development of multi‐target rapid diagnostic tests is recommended. Integration of respiratory viruses’ co‐infections into public health reports could also contribute to the accumulation of evidence
